The Skin: A Portal Between Worlds

The Skin: A Portal Between Worlds
Tone invites us to delve into the world of skin together – a world that is always awake and responding to all changes

October, 2025

As most creatures on our planet, we have skin as our container and surface to the world; even if it is covered with hair, fur, shell or feathers.

In embryonic development the ectoderm (one of the three layers we are formed of) gives rise to the skin and nervous system. It is a very early development of the embryo and starts during the third week after fertilization.

The skin is our largest organ, a sensory organ. As a matter of fact it’s a set of organs which are anatomically, physiologically, culturally and psychologically complex. As much as it is a protective barrier towards the outside world, it is highly responsive and an organ of communication.

Of all the senses that we have, touch is the most important, we can survive without seeing, smelling, tasting or hearing, but we cannot survive without touching. It is fundamental for our development as human beings. Touch gives us a sense of ourselves, it tells us something about where we begin and end; it confirms and locates us.

There is a dry side to the skin, the one we show to the world – it’s the outside, but on the inside of the skin, the world is wet, moist and fluid. The inside of our skin is one side we seldom visit. In the Continuum practice you can read further down this page, we will explore these two sides a bit more.

The skin never sleeps. It conveys information and has a lot of functions we are dependent on. It can change its shape, color and texture. It breaths, secretes, modulates body temperature and electrolyte balance; it acts like a sensory organ and much more. Modern science sees skin as a physical barrier. In ancient wisdom it is known to be a living interface between matter and spirit. When your energy frequency rises, it’s said that your skin becomes a cosmic message board where we can see visible signs of transformation.

In the book Sensitive Chaos by Theodor Schwenk, he asks, “Is it not of great significance that the world of stars permeates all movements of water, that water infuses all earthly life with the events of the cosmos, that all life processes are through water intimately connected with the course of the stars?”

In Continuum we acknowledge that we are fluid beings, with more than 70% fluid inside, also illuminated by the world of the stars. What does this mean to us? Can we change context and explore other parts of ourselves that we have not yet experienced. And if so, how do we do that?

Emilie Conrad always said, “Preparation is everything.”

“What are we preparing for?” is a valid question. We really don’t know, but we have to do the job of preparation anyway. In utero we prepare for this world without knowing what it’s like when we get there. Keep your senses alive and open to the happenings, the landscape that reveals itself to you.

I offer you a Continuum dive where you are invited to experience your skin as a fluid surface, resonating with your internal and external surroundings.

The Dive:

  • Baseline: Visit the outside of your skin, the dry side. Feel air, clothes, hands, different surfaces on skin. Sink deeper in and feel into the wet, moist part of your skin. How do you experience these two sides?
  • Open Attention.
  • Use Lunar Breath to moisten your inside/outside, and soften the barrier of the skin, making it more blurry. Do this at least 6 times.
  • Open Attention.
  • Imagine being a cell with its membrane. Keep your arms and legs closed, and lay down as you do the BOA-sound. Make the BO-sound with mouth closed to take on a shape and imagine filling up inside the cell membrane. Then use a whispered Ah-sound to let go of that shape, and imagine emptying some of what’s inside the cell. Repeat at least 6 times.
  • Open Attention.
  • Make the E-sound, wrapping/spiraling the body. Invite the matter to come from outside to wrap you gently and lovingly, like mist or transparent, light cloth or anything you can imagine that works for you. Trust what comes to you.
  • Open Attention.
  • Like sunshine on a watery surface, we use Tchsuu or Sah-Tschi sounds to mimic the shimmer on our own skin. Play with the sounds in a non-repetitive way. Offering and turning our watery surface to the cosmic happening, reconnecting with a larger field.
  • Open Attention.

Then go back to the Baseline and notice your outside and inside skin, and if you experience anything being different.
